About Wera

Wera has been a local councillor for the Norden Ward since 2004. When the Liberal Democrats took control of Rochdale Council in 2006, Wera became the lead member for Environment and Sustainability. After her second re-election as a councillor in 2010, Wera became the Chair of Rochdale Township. This role involves revitalising the town centre and overseeing the continued decentralisation from the centre to local communities.

Wera became the Parliamentary candidate for the Heywood and Middleton in 2007, and contested the 2010 general election. In this election the Labour majority was nearly halved, and the Liberal Democrat vote increased by over 3000 to a historic high in the Heywood and Middleton constituency.

Wera’s main political interests are the environment and sustainable transport, health and localism. Wera is passionate about engaging with communities and encouraging active citizenship.

Outside of politics, Wera is a mum of four children, two of whom have left school, and enjoys 20th century and contemporary art, the opera and cycling.
